Storyline : It's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO® invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.
At Comic-Con Saturday, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part star Chris Pratt commented on the way his character's journey from unassuming everyman to world-saving Special mirrored his own real-life career.
"When I was first given the role, I was Andy on Parks and Recreation," he said. "By the time we finished our recording session, I was Star-Lord."
"So that arc – it was one of those moments where you think, My life is a computer simulation and I am living in the Matrix."
In fact, there's a whole lot of Chris Pratt in The Lego Movie 2 – and we don't just mean his role as the voice of Emmet Brickowski.
Footage shown exclusively at Comic-Con revealed that Pratt voices a second character in the movie, Rex Dangervest. In a clear nod to Pratt's other famous roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, Rex is describe as a "galaxy-defending," "raptor-training" archaeologist.
Emmet is impressed by Rex, who's impressed by him in turn. "You're the reason I started wearing vests," Rex gushes. "Do you like mine?"
Emmet does, and the two quickly become "Vest Friends."
While Star-Lord himself did not show up in the footage, another familiar comic-book character did. A brief scene showed Lego Harley Quinn, voiced by Suicide Squad's Margot Robbie, describing something as "a suicide mission."
The footage also served up a look Tiffany Haddish's character, a colorful Lego unicorn from the "Sis-tar System" with the power to shape-shift.
At the panel, co-director Trisha Gum explained that The Lego Movie sequel would combine "two different imaginations" – Finn's, from the first movie, and his sister's. This one has "talking ice cream cones and bananas," and feels like a whole other world.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part opens Feb. 8, 2019.
